Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies. Sometimes I use recipes, but most of the times I don't, because I like to use my imagination.

One of my friends asked for my banana nut bread recipe, which is very well known by my closest friends and family. I did my best to give her all the instructions and ingredients. She wanted to substitute an ingredient, and I told her to do so. She asked me "how can you change the an ingredient and still get good results?" "Well," I said, "the secret is to know the properties of the ingredients". If you know what they can do, then you can change, and substitute as the need arises.

I think qualitative research is a lot like my cooking. The secret is in knowing the qualities and properties of the ingredients - that is, the components and tools used. In that way we can always adjust, substitute, and change the formula and still be confident that we will get good results, whatever they might be.
