EBP reminded me a lot like the Research course we took a few semesters back. It was not an easy course, and at times hard to understand; however, in the end by piecing together all the information the result, our final project, came together smoothly. We had the choice to choose which topic we wished to delve into, and like in Research, I cannot stress enough how important to pick a topic you have some interest in. By doing so you vest yourself into the information gathering and cannot wait to share the findings with your peers. The topic I explored over this course was "Supporting the Mother-Infant Dyad." This is a topic that is important to me a postpartum nurse striving to provide the most up to date care for my patients. This is also the same topic I did my STAR competency project on and I was able to utilize my EBP research to create a powerpoint to present to my manager and peers. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to managerial and organizational support when trying to implement EBP in the work place. Utilizing EBP mentors and forming Unit Based Councils to disseminate the info among staff is also crucial. There are several EBP models that organizations can adopt to begin adopting an EBP foundation. The biggest challenge I have observed when implementing EBP is resistance to change/ lack of buy in among staff. In order to combat this barrier pro EBP staff must lead by example, acknowledge and address concerns with factual evidence based data , and nip negative attitudes in the bud. Evidence based care is essential to nursing as it has been acknowledged as the highest level of care in the healthcare setting, facilitating the lowest costs overall, and providing superior patient outcomes (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015).
