NUR4776C- Informatics and Evidence-Based Clinical Judgement

This course has taught me how to use evidence-based practice in critical decision making and clinical judgement in my everyday practice as a Registered Nurse. I did not expect this course to help me improve my critical thinking skills, however, I find that even in my current nursing practice I find myself using my clinical judgement in a purposeful way. Understanding how evidence-based practice is used to improve patient outcomes is imperative in nursing. Research and studies show best practice for even the most common nursing interventions, and without the proper research and data that is collected with evidence-based practice the way things are done wouldn’t change or improve. This course has helped improve my nursing skills by also helping me better understand the nursing process itself. It goes beyond assessment and intervention, and in much greater depth to explain the “why” behind these interventions. With that being said, I absolutely feel like taking this course, and obtaining my BSN has made me a better nurse. My nursing judgement, and critical thinking skills are improved, and I find myself constantly wanting to research and understand the reasoning behind interventions and treatment plans for patients. Furthermore, I also feel as though this course has made me want to move forward with my MSN degree. Previously, I thought my BSN was where I may want to stop and gain more experience in my nursing career. However, I now find myself wanting to move forward and obtain my MSN and potentially become a family nurse practitioner in the future. In the beginning it didn’t seem as though a nursing research and evidence-based practice clinical judgement course could help me become a better nurse; however, this course has helped me think, and improve my nursing judgement. I am very glad that these courses are incorporated into the BSN program, and I can say with absolutely certainty that this course has helped me become a better and stronger nurse overall.
