Global Health has easily been my favorite course thus far. It is eye opening to see how many countries across the globe are still struggling with diseases such as Malaria, TB, and Measles; when healthcare workers in America hardly give these conditions a second thought since they scarcely occur on our soil. I believe the realization that these diseases are still prevalent, and deadly, has been paradigm shifting for me as I build global health awareness. It is not enough to battle a disease until it is no longer prevalent in your country; continued awareness of global trends is needed so healthcare workers do not let their guard down and the “eradicated” disease resurfaces. This course has taught me that resurfacing is quite possible due to lack of vaccinations, epidemics, and the con of global travel promoting the quick spread of disease.

Recognizing global situations is imperative to nursing. This course helped prepare me to recognize the multifaceted approach to promoting health via education, improving sanitation, and providing resources. I highly recommend nurses to find an opportunity to serve abroad on a medical mission to open their eyes to the poor health conditions many of the world faces, and to use the knowledge this course has provided to help improve global health.
